Lush and Beautifully Written April 21, 2000 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
I thought that this was a beautiful book but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone-if you're the type whose reading is limited to thrillers and soppy romance then I doubt this would do for you. But if you like imaginative, beautiful, flawless writing, like me, then you'd love this wonderful memoir everybit as much as I did. Ondaatje transports you into his world through his witty, tender and sensual writing...in places it reads like a poem. Running in the Family is sort of like a sketchbook...filled with humourous anecdotes, sensual poems and glimpses of beauty and history...and of course, his outrageous family. Even though I live in Sri Lanka and am familiar with most of the places and things he writes about I was still delightfully stunned by the way he adds new insight and meaning and beauty to these things. Also, I used to imagine that memoirs were dull and boring...but I totally regret my words now. This is hilarious (though in places exaggerated), beautiful and powerful stuff and I give it my highest recommendation. |

Larry Salander Pleads Guilty to $120 Million Art Fraud
NEW YORK—A year after his arrest on more than 100 criminal counts, former art dealer Larry Salander plead guilty to 29 counts of grand larceny in a Manhattan courtroom yesterday and confessed to defrauding artists, art consigners, investors, and other businesses in a series of schemes that are believed to have cost victims around $120 million. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance told reporters that Salander is likely to receive a sentence of six to 18 years in prison, confirming the prediction of the disgraced Upper East Side dealer's lawyer yesterday morning. The court is also expected to order Salander to pay back the $120 million, though his ability to do so remains in doubt. More than 30 civil law suits are seeking damages from Salander as well. |

At last! The book on acrylics I've dreamed of finding! April 28, 2007 Jana Bouc (El Cerrito, CA USA) 97 out of 98 found this review helpful
As a watercolor painter for 20 years and now trying to learn to paint with acrylics, I'd read every book I could find but they often contradicted each other or had out of date information or demonstrated really ugly painting. This book is THE acrylic bible, written by a master artist and teacher. It's full of helpful tips and specific detailed information about how to achieve any technique that can be done with oil or watercolor in acrylic, along with things that you can only do with acrylics. My goal is to be able to use acrylics more like oils and this book explains how it's done. Each technique includes "recipes" for how much of what mediums or additives to use to achieve the goals. The sample art work is superb and the writing is better and more clear than any art how to book I've read (and I have a huge library of them). I just can't say enough about how happy I am with this book and how much I appreciate the author's generous sharing of detailed, specific information. |
